The six-second tax: what a slow website quietly costs a small business

Superseded, 26 September 2026: What slow website speed costs: 10 sites, measured covers the same ground, with the full record behind it.

What a slow website costs a small business

Someone finds you on their phone. The page takes six seconds to appear. The text is too small to read and the phone number is three taps away. They go back and tap the next result.

That visit never shows in your analytics as a failure. You just see a quiet month.

What the numbers say

The industry studies point the same way. Past about three seconds, a meaningful share of visitors abandon the page. Conversion rates fall measurably with every added second. The enquiries you would have answered are what a slow page costs you.

A slow site fails invisibly. Nobody emails to say "your site was too slow so I called someone else." They simply call someone else.

Why small business sites get slow

Almost never the platform. Almost always one of five things:

  1. Heavy images. One 4 MB hero photo, straight off a camera, loads on every page.
  2. Pages that load everything at once. A dozen fonts. Four tracking scripts. A chat widget. Each waits its turn.
  3. Cheap shared hosting. Fine for a brochure. Painful the moment you add a shop.
  4. Unused plugins and leftovers. Old themes and dead plugins, duplicate libraries stacked over years.
  5. No caching. The server builds every page again from scratch for every visitor.

None of those need a new website. Each one can be fixed on the platform you already pay for.

The cheapest fixes first

  • Compress images and serve modern formats. Often the biggest win, and often free.
  • Add caching and a content delivery network. Most hosts offer both. Turn them on.
  • Remove what you do not use. Deactivate and delete the plugins whose job is already done.
  • Test on a real phone over mobile data. Your office wifi lies to you.
  • Re-measure after each change. One metric, before and after. That is how you know the fix worked.

Speed is a trust signal

Visitors never see your load time. They feel it. A site that appears instantly reads as competent. One that stutters reads as neglected, and neglect is what they are trying not to buy.

Fix speed first. It is the cheapest fix with the widest effect. It lifts every page, every ad, every link you have ever shared.
